Autoliv is currently looking for an Application Engineer at its Technical Center located in Auburn Hills, Michigan. In this role, the candidate will be responsible for the engineering/development and validation of driver airbag and steering wheel products. The candidate will lead, execute and support various project activities during technical critical phases of awarded programs such as the development of designs to be aligned with customers’ needs and Autoliv’s product/process roadmap, product validation per customer requirements in time to support production launch and problem solve engineering related issues. Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Creating / Validating Product Design for Steering Wheel and Driver Airbag
  • Working directly with the customer to negotiate styling vs. Autoliv standard design/processes.
  • Applying balance between easy to manufacture and meeting customer needs.
  • Understanding customer specifications and ensuring product is designed/validated accordingly.
  • Driving the design to meet 1P1P expectations.
  • Supporting all prototype part builds both internally and at the customer, as required.
  • Providing support to customer engineering and manufacturing plants, as required.
  • Attending, supporting and actively participating in Feasibility Design and Engineering reviews.
  • Creating design aligned with Autoliv Product Strategy and managing CAD to provide clear direction to design team.
  • Interpreting customer specifications to create and execute validation plans, generating and presenting reports to the customer for approval. 
  • Performing effectively as a cross-functional team member supporting all applicable internal departments including design, manufacturing, purchasing, quality, program management and suppliers to ensure a flawless program launch.  
  • Meeting deliverables as defined by engineering leadership such as; 
    • Design / DMFEA / Drawings / Validation Reports according to Autoliv Product Development Standard AS100.
    • Flawless launch of a product that we can produce easily, delights the customer, and makes target EBIT.
    • First Time Quality.
  • Performing tolerance stacks.
  • Applying GD&T on drawings.
  • Understanding manufacturing processes and needs; die cast, RIM, injection molding, stamping, assembly, interpreting CAE results.

Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of 1-3 years' of experience as an Engineer within the Automotive Industry is required. Other qualifications include but not limited to: 

  • Prior experience with Steering Wheel and Driver Airbag highly preferred.
  • Prior Experience in various projects that include Class ‘A’ automotive interior components (i.e.  Instrument panels, consoles, door panels, shift knobs, seats, etc.) highly preferred. 
  • Must have strong knowledge of GD&T.
  • Results-oriented with the ability to support cross-functional local and global teams.
  • Detailed-oriented with the capability to dig into data and prioritize tasks and decisions in a timely manner.
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and globally, as required for the position. Expectation is average of 20% to areas such as US, Mexico, Europe, Asia.
  • Possess strong drive and ambition towards continuous improvement.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with proven proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Sound interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate difficult concepts and negotiates with others to adopt a different point of view.
  • English language skills required; spanish language skills desired.
  • Training for customer systems such as Ford WERS, etc. is beneficial (not required).
